I love my blog, I look forward to checking it each morning. I like writing different articles for it. It’s a great feeling when you get a spark of inspiration for a post. It also makes me very happy when someone takes the time to write a comment, and they are nearly always nice friendly ones.
Reading other people’s blogs is also a highlight of my week. Some can be a small window into their life or advice on writing or simply great photos.
The problem I’m having is I spend too much time on my blog and have been neglecting my books. Ideally, I would love to have time to do both properly but then I would have to give up work, then how would I fund my jaffa cake habit?
I have reluctantly decided to blog just once a week, Mondays. I know on Friday I wrote an article stating that 3 times a week was ideal for me. Along with only blogging once a week I’m going to stop looking at the stats which I’m more than slightly obsessed with.
So, this is it for this week, the rest of the week will be a drivel free zone, but hopefully a more productive one on my book. I’m also going to limit my reading other blog to just one or two days as well but hopefully I will be able to keep up with all my favourite ones.
Stats obsession is a dangerous thing and very easy to fall into.

Me too. It’s not healthy, but v difficult to resist in a quiet moment

Sounds very constructive, you could always write to McVities and ask for an unpaid position as product tester for their Jaffa Cakes?

Now if it was paid it would solve all my problems.

I’m right there with you. Once the articles already written and queued post, I am considering dropping back to 2ce a week (vs. my current 3), and limiting the time I have always spent commenting ’round the web as well. (the latter will be the most difficult).
The only stat I’ve ever paid much attention to is follower numbers – and only because every time somebody follows, WordPress gives me a number in the feed. I have only visited my actual stats page maybe 10 times in six years (maybe less). My eyes crossed.
I look at engagement. I assume folks who “like” but never comment are liking from the reader – which I appreciate, but I wish they’d actually READ at least some of the posts I take a great deal of time preparing, hoping to help. Another incentive to pull back on my posts.

You never check the stats? I’ve managed not to look today but I’m getting a bit twitchy about not knowing.

Nope. Don’t really care – it won’t change what I write much anyway. NOT why I blog.

I’ve now been keeping away from them, it’s a very good idea.

Yeah – especially since so many people follow and like simply hoping to get the same back. Comment engagement tells me who’s really reading what I post.

I had a post last year go viral which was awesome at the time but has destroyed the meaningfulness of the majority of my stats. I know, such a problem to have, but really it did take some adjustment to get used to not checking every hour or so after a post went public.
Once a week is still all I can do too.

I’m trying to be realistic as to what I can do, I’m finding not checking the stats really hard which I know is silly.

Totally understand. They can be so very addictive.

Eric, smart move! Stats go up and down not dependent on blog posts some of the time. When I get more than on post a day from a blogger, I read one & delete the rest. Can’t believe how much time some bloggers spend trying to keep blog stats up! Even when I don’t post stats go up. Go figure! Once a week is good! Happy Monday! Christine

I normally check my stats continually during the day, I’ve gone all day without looking, I feel like I’m coming off drugs!

I have a lot of sympathy, Eric. Blogging is great fun, but it can be so time-consuming too.
