Quality not quantity

Last week I said I would have a go at re-spinning old post so here is the first one. I thought I would start with a short post I wrote 10 months ago;

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs by other authors and been stressing about my low word count.
The last couple of nights aided by a cosmo and glass or two of red I’ve managed to only write 500 – 600 words. Having looked back at what I wrote its some of the best bits I’ve done. From now on I’m going to stop worrying about how many words per day I write. The only snag with this new approach is I might be retied before I ever finish.

Well that was short and well…short. The thing is since then my word count has got worse not better! On a good day its 350 words although I try and write every day that’s not always my book as I have other things on the go. I just hope my quality has increased as my quantity decreases!

  1. You know, I’ve not thought about the word count. Not long after I started, a blogger in the village told me I was writing too much. I decided to ignore that comment although it’s a conundrum that seems to confound many people. I’ve seen blogs with virtually no words at all. I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t really matter and it depends on the blog and the blogger. This also made me look back at my 129 published posts: it seems that my posts vary from as little as 200 words where the photographs are the focus, to as much as 2,600.

    I’ve also realised that I can’t write (for my blog) every day, as much as I’d like to. My “day job” involves a significant amount of writing and reading and it takes time to “re-arrange” my head into what I’m going to say on the blog.

    My tuppence worth!

  2. Quality is certainly far better than quantity. You’ll get far better impact with quality. Some of my short stories have been less than 500 words and they’ve had huge impact. Others, have been over 1500 words and don’t get as much attention. The same goes with posts. I try and write at least 250 words a day, but it doesn’t always happen. Then on some days I’ll write over 2,500 words!

  3. At the risk of repeating what’s been said in previous comments, yes it is quality over quantity. I would however add that a certain self-discipline would be helpful. A certain wordcount goal, maybe a weekly average number, just to keep you from slacking.

  4. I would rather have a short n’ sweet post that is interesting, as opposed to a rambling affair that I never bother to read until the end. When I think of a “mandatory” word count, it makes me think of college writing requirements in my freshman year. *shudder*
